I'm going to assume that you have a few social media accounts and are already sharing pieces of your life with family and friends. Before you put your professional self out there, it's important to take a bit of time to prepare your profile for public consumption. Take a good look at your social media accounts. Check on your profile and privacy settings. Ask yourself a few questions...
Challenge 1: (Four Parts) One PL Hour
1. Do your social media profiles tell your professional story? If they do, great! If they don't, log in and take some time to tweak your profiles. 2. You are the author of your social media feed. But are you the only author? What about the content and photos posted by your friends? When they tag you in a post or photo, their content becomes your content. This may seem alarming to some folks and status quo for others. No matter what, you need to know that people can post to your page without your permission. Unless you change the settings in the privacy and timeline and tagging sections. Go ahead and explore those settings now and make any changes. If you're interested in my settings.....I have the timeline and tagging settings arranged so that I approve all posts from friends. 3. Now that your settings are in order and your profile is ready to publish to a global community, take a few minutes to join some educator groups, follow some pages, and other education professionals. 4. In the comment thread below, take a moment to introduce yourself! Include a link to one of your spiffy profiles so that we can begin to share resources with each other. Tell us why you are interested in learning more about using social media as an educator.

Using Social Media is great for use in the world of education because it's an easy way to stay connected to the latest trends in education. It's a great way to make connections with students and it's a great way to keep parents in the loop. I'm always looking for the latest social media trends that might help me improve the ways in which I can deliver content to my students.

Katie, I finally accepted Angela's challenge to try Twitter and while I have found that there is too much on my own account, the one that my clerk and I set up for our Media Center at Ellis I love. So - YES! Jump in and give it a try!

Hi! My name is Becky Evans, and I am a third grade teacher at Godley Station School. I have a facebook but I that's a personal account and I prefer to keep it that way. It is my way of keeping in touch with family and friends that live far away, since I am not a native of Georgia. I don't have a twitter or linkedin but I do have a Pinterest account which I use for educational ideas all the time. I will definitely look into adding new accounts to add to my professional portfolio.

I created an additional Instagram page and I'm considering having a page on FB. I definitely share too much kiddo stuff on my personal fb & Instagram for family and friends and don't want parents to be able to contact me through social media (FB msg)

Hi, my name is Alisa Harris, and I am the Spanish teacher at Georgetown K-8. I love using Facebook for my personal life, and I would love to start using it for my classroom. I teach so many students that connecting with all parents via email would be tough, but I think Facebook would be a great way to connect with parents who are interested. Question.... can we set up a separate classroom Facebook account rather than use our personal account? I doubt my students' parents are interested in my children's endeavors.

I've created, but done nothing with a fb page. I'm thinking that may be my work around, rather than having another profile, and that way I could manage it through the FB pages app.

Thanks! I see that you are a PE teacher. I am a Spanish teacher. Do you think parents would look at a Facebook page if you created it? I am an "elective" as well, and I don't know that parents would take time to look at a FB page for something that's not a "core" class. What do you think? 9/25/2016 05:46:07 pm
I am the media specialist at Charles Ellis and you can see that I am late to this class - but finally getting caught up! So glad that my co-worker, Ms. Lisa, is already well into this.

Hi All! I am Marti Cribbs and I am a gifted resource teacher at Georgetown. I am new to the cohort and trying to catch up. In reading all the previous comments, I feel that most of us have a common concern about using Facebook for both personal and professional purposes. I, too, share that concern. I definitely use FB as a way to connect with family and friends. I don't feel my parents need to see all that goes on in my personal life. Although I post nothing inappropriate, I am not sure I want my parents to see pictures of my children and friends, places I might frequent or vacation to, etc. Angela and I had a long chat about this when she was in our building the other day and I felt much better. Then, over the weekend, I was afraid again to take the plunge. I am nervous to dive fully in. Perhaps further discussion on this topic would make us all feel better??? The waters are still a little muddy for me....

Ok....I know you told me that the other day and that makes me feel much better. I think my fear this weekend came from trying to figure it out myself and "mess up." I thought I had to go ahead and do it in order to catch up to everyone else. I will wait for further directions and/or for you to come to my school to show me how. Thanks for the clarification!! :)

I am right there with you Marti. I feel nervous sometimes about my classroom getting to close to my home life and that is why I joined the Cohort to see if I can learn how to successfully have an online presence without that fear. Hopefully we will find the answer here.
